The cost of car insurance for your 4WD in Australia depends on a range of factors, including the level of cover you choose.
At Youi, some of the other things we consider include:
- Your driving history
- Your age and driving experience
- Where you park your 4WD
- Your 4WD’s age, make and model
- What you use your 4WD for.
Paying for your car insurance annually instead of monthly – or choosing a higher excess – might reduce your premium. Third-party policies typically cost less than comprehensive cover, as they cover fewer insured events. If you’re deciding between different levels of 4WD insurance cover, it’s a good idea to carefully consider what’s included – and excluded – in each policy so you can choose the best car insurance for your needs.
When it comes to car insurance, 4x4s aren’t necessarily more expensive to insure. Like any type of vehicle, the cost of insurance for 4WDs will depend on factors including the age, make and model of the 4WD, the address and security where you normally park it, and the level of car insurance you choose.
Our make and model comparison tool can give you an idea of how premiums vary, depending on your preferred 4x4 ride. Alternatively, get in touch with us for a car insurance quote for your 4WD.
All-wheel drives (AWD) and four-wheel drives (4WD or 4x4) differ slightly in terms of how they drive and operate mechanically, but when it comes to car insurance, Youi may have a policy to suit you, regardless of which type of vehicle you have.
In Australia, there’s only one type of mandatory insurance for vehicles – Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance. 4WDs are no different; however, CTP doesn’t cover damage to your 4x4 or – if you’re involved in an accident that’s your fault – damage to anyone else’s vehicle either.
Other types of 4x4 insurance, including Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft and Third Party Property Only may offer important coverage depending on your 4WD and your circumstances.
If your 4WD was designed to drive off-road or on the beach, it may be covered under your car insurance, provided its used in line with the manufacturer’s specifications and you take reasonable care to prevent loss or damage.13
With our Comprehensive car insurance, Roadside Assist may be able to help if your 4WD becomes bogged, but only if it’s in a location that a conventional two-wheel drive recovery vehicle can safely reach your 4WD and specialist equipment isn’t required. This means recovery assistance may not be available if your vehicle is bogged deep in soft sand on the beach.1
At Youi, with our Comprehensive and Third Party Fire & Theft 4x4 insurance, we may insure vehicles that have been legally modified to improve performance or handling, provided you tell us about these modifications and we agree on any specific amounts that are applicable.14
Cover for the following additions to your 4WD is automatically included: baby seats, personalised plates, towbars and window tinting.3
