While family car buyers of the past had a relatively simple choice between a small hatchback or a larger sedan or wagon, or perhaps a 4WD, an increase in the market size has led to dozens of different vehicle types suitable for family duties.

BYD Sealion 6 from $42,9908
The BYD Sealion 6 was named Best Affordable PHEV SUV for 2026 by Car Expert and was made available on the market in early 2025.9 This model from BYD offers a 1.5L turbo plug-in hybrid layout meaning it can drive fully electric only using the engine if necessary.10 It also offers convenient features such as keyless entry and start, one-touch open and close of the tailgate10 – which comes in handy if you’ve got your hands full.
MG HS from $33,99011
A finalist for the best medium SUV under $50k by Drive,7 the MG HS is on the more affordable end of family cars. With a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, this MG model includes safety features such as forward collision warning and lane keep assist, it may be ideal for a busy family during road trips.12

An honourable mention is the BMW X5 which is considered a family favourite among the large luxury SUVs available in Australia.25 Noted as fusing aesthetics and performance, versatility and comfort, the X5 offers intuitive infotainment and space for any sized family – ideal for holidays or loading everyone up for the weekend sports.26
Will the family car I choose affect my insurance?
Before you go ahead and buy your dream family car, it’s worth considering the car insurance that you choose along with it. While car insurance won’t restrict the type of car you can purchase, the car you choose may have an impact on your insurance.27
The make, model and age of your vehicle, as well as any modifications you might make to the car, can impact how much premium you will pay.27
