Car insurance FAQs

Got questions about car insurance quotes or something else? You might find the answers here.

Car insurance works by helping to cover you financially if your car is stolen, damaged, or causes damage to someone else’s car or property. You pay a premium – in return, your insurer provides cover for certain risks or events. This may involve paying for repair, replacement or liability costs if an insured event occurs.

At Youi, your cover will depend on the type of policy you choose. Comprehensive car insurance, for example, covers damage to your car and others’ property, while Third Party Property Only covers liability for damage that your car causes to other vehicles and property.

Car insurance can cover damage to your car, other vehicles or property, and injury to others. But really – what car insurance covers depends on the level of cover you choose.

At Youi, we offer several car insurance options:

Comprehensive
Our highest level of car insurance covers your car for accidents, theft, fire and some weather events. It also provides liability cover if your car causes damage to someone else’s car or property.

Third Party, Fire & Theft
Covers your car if it’s damaged due to fire, theft, or attempted theft. This policy also provides liability cover if your car causes damage to someone else’s car or property.

Third Party Property Only
Covers the driver’s legal liability arising from an accident caused by the car for damage to a third party's property.

Limits, fees and exclusions apply with each type of cover. See our car insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to decide if the product is right for you.

We also offer NSW CTP insurance and SA CTP insurance if you’re based in those states.

The cost of car insurance in Australia depends on factors like your age, car, location, driving history and the level of cover you choose.

  • At Youi, some of the factors we consider are:
  • your driving history
  • your age and driving experience
  • where you park
  • how you use your car
  • your car’s make and model

Wondering how car insurance may be reduced? Paying annually instead of monthly or choosing a higher excess might reduce your premium. And third-party policies typically cost less than comprehensive cover, as they cover fewer types of insured events. Just make sure you consider what's included – and excluded – in each policy so you can choose the right level of cover for you.

In Australia, the only mandatory type of car insurance you need is Compulsory Third Party insurance – also known as Green Slip insurance in NSW, or CTP in South Australia.

All other types of car insurance – such as comprehensive, third party fire and theft, and third party property only – are optional but might offer important coverage depending on your vehicle and circumstances.

Explore our car insurance PDS for a deep dive into each of the covers we offer under our car insurance product.

You can make a car insurance claim with us online 24/7 – or by calling 13 YOUI (9684). Then you can track the status of your claim online or through the Youi app.

For more information on lodging claims, see our Making a Claim page.

Excess in car insurance is the amount you need to pay when making an insurance claim. Types of car insurance excess include:

Basic excess
This is the initial amount you pay on each and every car insurance claim.

Reduced basic excess for windscreen claims
You might have the opportunity to pay an extra premium to lower the excess for claims that solely involve the windscreen, window glass, or sunroof glass claims.

Additional excess
An additional excess may apply based on certain circumstances – listed on your policy schedule.

Driver specific excess
An additional excess may apply based on who was driving at the time of an incident – such as unlisted or young drivers.

Your excess will be shown on your policy schedule. See our car insurance PDS for more details.

To update your car insurance policy with Youi, log into your account online or via the Youi app –  24/7. As well as updating your policy’s contact details, you can view and manage your policies, and lodge or track car insurance claims.

  • exhaust
  • disability modifications such as lifts and ramps

Read our car insurance PDS or contact us to check coverage for your specific modifications.

Yes – you can pay your car insurance monthly or annually with Youi. Monthly payments offer flexibility - but annual payments may attract a lower total premium. We let you choose what suits your budget and lifestyle.

You can learn more about the factors that can impact your car insurance premium here.

To make a claim after a car accident, make sure you – or someone listed on your policy – gathers key details, including:

  • your policy number
  • location, date and time of the accident
  • a description of what happened
  • third party details, if applicable

Use our Car Accident Checklist to guide you through what to do at the scene of an accident – and after.

To start a car insurance quote with Youi, you’ll need:

  • car details – make, model, year, colour, condition and value
  • usage – business, private or mixed use
  • driver details – your licence type, driving history and age
  • other drivers’ details – info about anyone else regularly driving your car (listed drivers)
  • parking location – where your car is typically parked (garage, carport, street) could affect your insurance premium.
