How is the cost of car insurance calculated?

When it comes to the cost of your insurance, there are a few different factors that can impact your premium.

Your Youi car insurance quote will take these factors into account and provide you with an indicative premium that’s based on your individual circumstances.

Your level of cover

First of all, the level of cover you choose can have an impact on your car insurance premium. You could choose Third Party Property Only, Third Party Fire & Theft or Comprehensive insurance.

Insurance excess

The amount of excess you decide to pay as part of your cover can impact the cost of your car insurance. You can usually reduce your premium by choosing to pay a higher excess on your policy. However, this does mean you’ll have to pay more if you ever need to lodge a claim. It’s all about choosing what’s right for you.

Type of car

The make, model, value, age, condition and even colour of your car can impact your premium amount. Whether you've made any modifications or added any after-market accessories to the vehicle can also affect how much you might pay for your cover. For more details, find out about the car insurance cost for your car’s make and model.

Where you keep your car

Whether you keep your car in a garage, a carport, or on the street can impact the cost of your car insurance. Some suburbs have higher crime rates than others, while some locations are more susceptible to severe weather events. This is why, when calculating the cost of your premium, we’ll need to know your location, and whether your car will be kept in a locked garage, or on the street.

How much your car is covered for

The value of cover is the most your insurer will pay to repair or replace your car if you make a claim for an insured event and the claim is accepted. The more your car is covered for, the higher your premium is likely to be. For example, a policy that covers the car for up to $50,000 is usually going to be more expensive than a policy that only provides cover for up to $15,000.

Your age and driving experience

Your age and the amount of driving experience you have will be considered when you start a quote with Youi for car insurance. Typically, the younger someone is, the less driving experience they’re likely to have. For this reason, age can play a part in the cost of your car insurance.

Vehicle use

How you use your car may impact your insurance premium. If you rarely use the vehicle, your premium is likely to be lower than if you were to use it all day, every day. Also, the more kilometres you drive each year, or if you use the car for business purposes, could mean a higher cost for insurance.

Claims history

The number of insurance claims you’ve made can have an impact on your premium. More claims can often mean a higher cost for cover.

Car insurance cover by state

Just like how every state and territory in Australia has something unique and different to offer, car insurance can also be different, depending on where you live.

New South Wales

From Byron Bay to Broken Hill, and Coonabarabran to Coffs Harbour, the people of New South Wales know good car insurance when they see it, and that can help them save. In NSW, around 89%* of people who switched to Youi told us they saved an average of $217 per year* on their car insurance.

Drivers in NSW pay amongst the highest car insurance premiums in Australia, so your car insurance may end up costing more than it would in other states.4

You need mandatory Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance to be able to drive on NSW roads. This type of car insurance protects you from the financial impact of causing injuries or death to others as the result of a motor accident.

From there, you can choose from a range of car insurance options depending on your personal situation. Explore Youi’s Comprehensive insurance, Third Party Fire & Theft insurance, and Third Party Property Only insurance to see which might suit your individual needs in NSW.

Queensland

Here at Youi, we’ve got options to help cover you on the Queensland roads, whether you’re doing a long stretch down the Bruce Highway or just heading to work through the Brisbane Valley. In Queensland, around 83%* of people who switched to Youi told us they saved an average of $196 per year* on their car insurance.

To start off, you’ll need mandatory Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance through the registration process,5 which protects you from the financial impact of causing injury or death to others as the result of a motor accident.

From there, you can choose from a range of Youi’s car insurance options depending on your individual needs. Explore Youi’s Comprehensive insurance, Third Party Fire & Theft insurance, and Third Party Property Only insurance to see which might suit you best.

Cameras are used in Queensland to target offences like using your phone illegally while driving, or drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts. Along with harsh penalties, this can result in Queensland drivers losing demerit points, and in some cases, their licences if they do the wrong thing.6

If you’ve lost your licence, had it suspended or incurred demerit points, it can be difficult to get car insurance – so make sure you’re always doing the right thing on Queensland roads.

Victoria

From Melbourne to Mildura, Wodonga to Warrnambool, and Bendigo to Bairnsdale, there are plenty of reasons why Victorians choose Youi for quality car insurance and customer service. In Victoria, around 87%* of people who switched to Youi told us they saved an average of $221 per year* on their car insurance.

All Victorian drivers need Compulsory Third Party (CTP or Transport Accident Charge) insurance, which is included in your car’s registration cost.

From there, you can consider the right level of Youi cover for you to protect yourself from damage to other people, cars and property.

Take a look at Youi’s Comprehensive insurance, Third Party Fire & Theft insurance, and Third Party Property Only insurance to consider which policy might suit you best.

Whether your car insurance policy costs more in regional Victoria or inner-city Melbourne will depend on the level of cover you choose and your individual circumstances. However, in general, car insurance does tend to cost more in densely populated areas as opposed to regional areas.4

Western Australia

Here at Youi, we pride ourselves on being there for you when you need us across Western Australia, with friendly customer service and 24/7 claims assistance. Whether you live in a quiet outback town or a bustling part of Perth, Youi has car insurance options that could be ideal for you.

Around 83%* of people in Western Australia who switched to Youi told us they saved on car insurance, saving an average of $186 per year.* Who doesn’t like a bit of extra money in the bank?

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance is (as the name suggests) compulsory car insurance in Western Australia, as it protects you from the financial impact of causing injury or death to others as the result of a motor accident where you’re at fault.8 You can pay for your CTP car insurance in Western Australia when you register your vehicle with the Department of Transport.

You may also want to consider taking out a Youi Comprehensive car insurance, Third Party Fire & Theft insurance, or Third Party Property Only insurance policy, depending on your individual needs.

Youi Comprehensive car insurance is (unsurprisingly) the most comprehensive level of cover we offer, providing protection from things including accidental damage, theft, fire, and most severe weather events like storms, floods, hail and earthquakes.7

Insurance is generally all about assessing risk, and different areas of Western Australia come with different levels of risk when it comes to damage, theft, fire, storms, and other insured events. The higher the risk level of the area you live in, the higher your insurance premium will likely be, as the more likely it is that you’ll be affected by an insured event and need to make a claim.

Australian Capital Territory

Being such a great place for road trips and with so many iconic sights to see, having a great car insurance policy for your vehicle is ideal when driving in Canberra, throughout the ACT and beyond. Around 86%* of people in the ACT who switched to Youi told us they saved an average of $217 per year* on their car insurance.

In the ACT, every driver must have Motor Accident Injury (MAI) insurance as part of the registration process. This type of cover is equivalent to CTP insurance in most other states, or ‘Green Slip’ insurance in NSW. MAI covers your liability for injuries or deaths to third parties in an accident no matter who is at fault.1

As well as MAI insurance, you may want to consider a car insurance policy with a greater level of cover when living in the ACT, such as a Youi Comprehensive car insurance policy, a Third Party Fire & Theft policy or a Third Party Property Only policy.

Between 16th November 2020 and 16th November 2022 in the ACT, we did 1,214 call-outs – the majority of which were for car battery problems.2 Lucky our roadside assistance comes standard with every Comprehensive car policy and is just a phone call away.3

Tasmania

Explore your options with Youi if you’re lucky enough to live in Tassie and need a new car insurance policy. From Hobart to Devonport, and Strahan to Strathgordon, we’ve got you covered. In Tasmania, around 82%* of people who switched to Youi told us they saved an average of $186 per year* on their car insurance.

In Tasmania, it’s mandatory to have Compulsory Third Party (CTP) car insurance, which is handled by the Motor Accidents Insurance Board (MAIB) as part of the registration process. This cover protects you from the financial impact of causing injuries or death to others as the result of a motor accident where you’re at fault.

Once you have CTP insurance, you can choose the level of cover you’d like in addition to this. There are a range of types of car insurance available in Tasmania to choose from on top of your CTP, including Youi’s Comprehensive car insurance, Third Party Fire & Theft and Third Party Property Only.

Comprehensive car insurance is Youi’s top level of cover, protecting your vehicle from insured events like accidental damage, theft and attempted theft, fire, and most severe weather events like storms, floods and hail.7

There are a few things you’ll need to get a car insurance cost estimate from Youi, including:

  • Your car's details: We’ll need to know the make, model, value, condition, year and colour of your car to make sure your policy and premium are accurate.
  • Contact and driving details: We’ll need some basic contact info, including your type of licence, as well as some details about your driving history.
  • Where your car is usually parked: You should let us know whether you park your car on the street, in a carport, in a garage or at another location as this could also affect your insurance premium.
  • What you use the car for: Is your pride and joy used for business or pleasure? Let us know as this can affect your premium.
  • Other drivers’ details: If other people will be driving your car, you can add them as listed drivers by providing info such as their name and driving history.

Typically, yes, it is cheaper to pay your Youi car insurance premium annually. Alternatively, you may be able to pay over 12 monthly instalments. But it will usually cost you a bit extra to pay monthly, however some people go with this option as it works better for their finances.

While we don't recognise specific bonuses or ratings from other insurers, we instead ask you to provide us with information around your driving experience, claims history and insurance history. That way, we can provide you with an accurate quote that suits your situation.

While we don't offer a specific discount if you don't drive your car very often, there are some factors that can help reduce the cost of your premium. For example, the fewer kilometres you drive in the car per year and the fewer days per week that you drive it to work or study, could help lower the amount you pay for your cover.7
