Car insurance for Jeep

In June 1940, the US Army solicited bids from a number of automakers to create a ¼ ton ‘light reconnaissance vehicle’. The companies Ford, Bantam and Willys responded, and within a year they produced the template for a vehicle that would eventually become known as the ‘Jeep’. Willys-Overland delivered the prototype ‘Quad’ model in November 1940. It was named for the 4x4 system it featured, and the Jeep would eventually emerge from the war years as heroic.¹

From 1945 onwards, the CJ-2A model Jeep was marketed as ‘The All-Around Farm Work-Horse’, since it could perform the duties of 2 draft horses, for 10 hours at a time. This was how the Jeep went from being a military vehicle, to becoming more commonplace in civilian life. Around this time Popular Science magazine also offered cash rewards for ‘Ideas on Peacetime Jobs for Jeeps’, which led to a Model A Jeep being used as an ice resurfacing machine, among other things.¹

In the late 1940s, the open-bodied convertible Jeepster (VJ) was marketed at women and college grads as a sporty ‘sunshine only’ car. Although it was originally intended to be a low-cost sports car, it ended up costing around $1,900, which was incredibly expensive for the time. In 1971, the British glam-rock band T. Rex famously referred to this car in their song ‘Jeepster’, singing ‘Girl, I’m just a Jeepster for your love.’¹
