Information about indicative premium ranges and comparisons

When we display the indicative Comprehensive premium range for a car make and model, or offer a comparison of how a model’s annual premium compares to Youi premiums for all models for that car brand, we adopt some important guidelines:

  • The information displayed is based on Youi internal data for Comprehensive policies sold for the make and model between 06 Sep 2025 and 06 Mar 2026.
  • To improve how useful our data is, we only calculate our average comparisons on models where Youi data is available on at least 10 sold Comprehensive policies for that model.
  • As you would expect, we get some higher or lower premiums based on different risk ratings, so the indicative range does not represent all Youi customers. 80% of applicable Comprehensive car premiums purchased by our customers fell within or below the indicative premium range shown.
  • Premiums and offers to insure are subject to rating & underwriting, and your own individual circumstances.

Interesting facts about Volkswagen

‘Volkswagen’ translates as ‘people’s car’

This famous brand gets its name from the German words for ‘people’ (volk) and ‘car’ (wagen). After Henry Ford pioneered the mass production of the Model-T in America in 1908, European manufacturers were keen to develop a car that was similarly affordable. Because vehicle taxes and fuel prices were high, the ‘people’s car’ needed to have a small engine to be economically feasible.1

The VW Beetle was the best selling car of the 1950s

By the mid 1950s, Volkswagen was enjoying international success, with the Beetle (officially called ‘Type 1’) holding a global market share of around 40%. In keeping with the company’s original goal to create an affordable car for the people, the engineering and design of the Beetle helped to make cars accessible for the general public.1

Volkswagen’s second success was the Transporter van

The Transporter was the second type of vehicle to be developed by Volkswagen, hence its official name: ‘Type 2’. In the mid 1950s, the T2 had a global market share of about 30%, thanks to its versatility: it was used as a police car, fire department vehicle, postal delivery van, and camping bus. In Australia, most people refer to this vehicle as the Kombi van.1

In 1972, the Beetle beat the record for the most produced car

On 17th February 1972, the 15,007,034th Volkswagen Beetle was produced: breaking the record previously held by the Ford Motor Company for the Model-T. ‘Tin Lizzy’, as the Model-T was affectionately called, was built from 1908 to 1927, and up until 1972 it had held onto its title as the world’s most produced car until it was overtaken by Volkswagen.1
