What is Third Party Property car insurance?

Maybe it’s a moment of distraction or a tight reverse park. Either way, accidents happen – and our Third Party car insurance helps cover the damage you cause to someone else’s car or property. With Youi, it also includes limited cover if an uninsured driver causes accidental damage to your car1 and some temporary cover when you switch cars.2

What does our Third Party Property insurance cover?

Cover against uninsured drivers

Accidents are stressful enough without the worry of what happens when the other party is uninsured. So, if they’re entirely at fault and you provide us with the required details, we’ll cover you for up to $5,000 after excess.1

Legal liability

Our Third Party Property insurance covers up to $20 million in legal liability if you cause damage to someone else’s property.2

Temporary replacement cover

When you sell or give away your car and replace it with another, we’ll transfer your cover across to your replacement car for up to 14 days after you sell or give away the old one.2

Counselling services

Your well-being matters. That’s why our Third Party car insurance reimburses up to $1,500 per person for counselling for you, listed drivers and household members after an accepted claim.2

What’s not covered

Choosing the right third party insurance can be tricky. We make it easier to understand what’s covered – and what’s not – so you can choose the best fit for you. Some examples of what’s not covered by Third Party Property Only car insurance:

Intentional damage

Intentional damage to your car isn’t covered.

Storm, hail and flood

You won’t be covered for storms or floods, including hail damage.

Fire

Cover for fire damage to your car isn’t included.

Theft

We won’t cover the costs of repairing or replacing your car if it’s stolen.

Accidental damage

The cost of repairing or replacing your car due to accidental damage won’t be covered, except in very limited circumstances (see above “Cover against uninsured drivers”).

Personal injury related costs to third parties

If someone’s hurt in an accident and you’re at fault, our Third Party Property insurance policy won’t cover injury costs. That’s what Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance is for – and if you’re in NSW or SA, Youi can help with that too.

FAQs

Third Party Property Only might be more affordable – but it covers less risk.

It’s designed to cover the damage you cause to other people’s cars or property. It does not cover your own vehicle – unless you’re hit by an uninsured driver and meet certain conditions.

Comprehensive car insurance offers broader coverage, including damage to your own car and events like accidents – whether you’re at fault or not – malicious damage, hail damage, some natural disasters, heavy storms, fire, theft and more.

No – it only covers damage to other people’s property, not your own.

However, Youi’s Third Party Property policy includes limited cover for damage to your car if an uninsured driver is at fault. You may be eligible for up to $5,000 – after excess – if an uninsured driver damages your car and is at fault. You’ll just need to provide the other driver’s details when you make a claim –such as their name, phone number, address, and vehicle rego.

To calculate the cost of Third Party Property car insurance, insurers – including Youi – look at a range of factors. These include your age, driving history and incurred demerit points, where you live and where the car is parked, the type, age and value of the car, and any previous claims or incidents.

Yes – most claims under Third Party Property insurance require you to pay an excess.

The excess amount will be the combined total of the basic excess and any other applicable excess. If you’re insured with Youi, these amounts will be listed on your policy schedule. You may not need to pay an excess if you weren’t at fault and you can identify the at-fault driver and provide their details.

No – Third Party Property insurance is optional.

Third Party Property insurance covers the cost of damage to someone else’s vehicle or property – but it’s not a legal requirement.

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance –  sometimes called a Green Slip in NSW – is legally required in every Australian state and territory. It covers injuries or fatalities caused to other people in a car accident.

Looking for CTP in SA, or for NSW CTP ‘Green Slip’ insurance? We’ve got you covered.

You can make a claim under your Third Party Property Only car insurance policy via the Youi app, our online claims portal, or by phoning us – 24/7.

Check out our article for more on car insurance claims.

If someone claims you caused damage to their vehicle or property, and you have a policy with Youi:

  1. Contact us and lodge a claim
  2. Don’t admit fault or make any agreements directly
  3. Once accepted, we’ll handle communication with the other party and cover damage up to your policy's limit

Admitting fault too early may impact your claim.

Yes – learner drivers are covered with Youi, as long as they’re supervised by a fully licensed driver.

However, any claim involving a learner may attract a higher excess, depending on your policy. Always check your policy schedule to confirm who is covered and what excess applies.
