The cost of Comprehensive car insurance in Victoria

The cost of your Comprehensive car insurance in Victoria is based on your unique circumstances. It’s totally individual, just like you. However, here are a few factors that may impact your car insurance premium.

Youi car insurance Vic FAQs

Have more questions about car insurance in Victoria? You might find the answers you’re looking for here.

The cost of car insurance in Vic depends on factors, such as:

  • Your age – if you’re under 25, you may be considered riskier to insure, which could mean a higher insurance premium.
  • The type of car you drive – its make, model, age, market value, condition and even colour might impact the cost of insurance.
  • Your personal driving record – how long you’ve held your licence for and any demerit points you’ve incurred could affect your insurance premium.
  • Your location – where you live and where your car is usually parked (for example, on the street, in a garage or in a driveway) can make a difference to your car insurance premium.
  • The cover you choose – from Third Party Property Only to Comprehensive, the level of cover you choose also affects the cost of insurance.
  • How you use your car – whether it’s for private use or for business may also impact your insurance premium.

To get a better idea of how much auto insurance in Victoria might cost you, consider starting a car insurance quote online.

Yes. In Victoria, your car is legally required to have Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance.14 Called the Transport Accident Charge (TAC), it comes with the car’s registration and covers injuries to other people if there’s an accident.14

But CTP insurance doesn’t cover damage to cars or property – for that, you might like to explore other insurance policy types such as comprehensive car insurance or a third party car insurance in Victoria policy.15

If you’re after more cover – say, if your car’s stolen,2 if your car’s damaged in an accident,5 or damaged by storms5,6 – we’ve got options that could work for your lifestyle and budget.

Take a closer look at Youi’s Third Party Property Only, Third Party Fire & Theft and Comprehensive car insurance policies to see what’s included for Victorian drivers. For full details, read our car insurance PDS.

At Youi, we offer three different levels of car insurance in Victoria:

  • Comprehensive car insurance – This covers your car for theft,2 certain types of severe weather events,5,6 and intentional and accidental damage,5 even if a car accident is your fault. It also includes cover for damage your car causes to other people’s cars or property.7
  • Third Party Fire & Theft – Includes cover for your car for fire damage3,6 and theft,2 as well as your legal liability if you damage someone else’s vehicle or property.7
  • Third Party Property Only – Covers damage to someone else’s vehicle or property,7 but doesn’t cover your own car for damage.

The type of car insurance that’s right for you and your car will depend on the level of insurance cover you want or might need.

When you’re trying to choose car insurance cover, compare the inclusions, exclusions and any optional extras of individual policies and cover levels to see what might best suit you and how you drive your car.

And to find out what different levels of vehicle insurance cover might cost for your car at Youi, consider starting a car insurance quote online.

If you want to compare car insurance quotes in Victoria from different insurers, there are a few steps you can take that might help in getting an accurate comparison:

  • Check for comparable cover – As well as making sure each quote is for the same type of policy or level of cover, compare the inclusions and exclusions.
  • Double check the details – Car insurance premiums change depending on a variety of factors such as who’ll drive your car regularly and where it’s usually parked. Make sure you’ve used the same information to generate each car insurance quote you’re comparing to get a more accurate picture of potential costs.
  • Use the same excess – Choosing a higher car insurance excess – which is the amount you pay when you make a claim – may result in a lower insurance premium. So, when you’re comparing car insurance quotes, try to make sure the excess amount selected is consistent.

The answer to this might depend on who is at fault for the accident. Working that out after a car accident isn’t always straightforward and could depend on factors such as the type of crash and the circumstances surrounding it.

In some instances, the fault might be split, evenly or proportionally, between both involved parties.16 For this reason, fault determination will typically be the responsibility of your insurance company and/or legal representative.17

However, if you’re deemed to be not at fault for the accident, the other driver will likely be responsible for the cost of repairing your car, whether they do or don’t have insurance.16

If you have comprehensive car insurance with Youi and you’re involved in a car accident, damage to your car is covered under your policy regardless of who was at fault for the incident.5

Lodging insurance claims with Youi is simple, thanks to our 5-step process. Here’s what you can expect.

Step 1: Lodge
Claims can be lodged over the phone or anytime online. You’ll need your policy number and information about the incident, including what happened, where and when.

Step 2: Assess
We’ll evaluate the damage, outline what happens next, provide regular updates, and let you know if your claim is accepted.

Step 3: Action
If your claim’s given the green light, we’ll move forward with arranging repairs, depending on your level of cover.

Step 4: Track
Keep tabs on your claim with our online tracker so you’re never left wondering what’s happening or what comes next.

Step 5: Resolve
Once repairs are complete and your claim is settled, we’ll close the file.

Empathetic Service

Empathetic service shown to my 19yo daughter who had an accident in VIC, I was able to speak to a Youi representative who then called her to get the details and call me back with the claim info. We were both kept up to date with the claim process. Thanks Youi.
