What is contents insurance for renters?

When you’re a tenant in someone else’s property, renter’s insurance is there to cover your possessions. We know that your belongings don’t define you – but we also know they’re important to you. Contents insurance for renters provides cover for your things – clothes, electronics, furniture and more – against theft, fire, flood, storm or other insured events.1

What does Youi renter’s insurance cover?

Theft

Cover for loss or damage to your possessions caused by theft, attempted theft or a burglary at your home.

Fire

We’ll cover damage to your possessions from a bushfire or other accidental fire, including damage by soot and smoke.2

Temporary Accommodation

If your rental becomes unliveable following an insured event, we’ll cover the additional cost of rent for up to 1 month – plus we’ll pay up to $250 for pet accommodation too.3

Intentional Damage

Not all damage is accidental. That’s why we provide automatic cover for loss or damage to the insured property caused intentionally by someone not living at or invited on to the property.4

Tenants Liability

If there’s loss or damage to your landlord’s fitted carpets, fixtures and fittings due to an insured event, and you are responsible for arranging cover for those items under the terms of your rental or lease agreement, we’ll help with the cost of repair or replacement up to 10% of the contents sum insured after excess.4

Contents Cover While You Move

Moving from one rental to another is nobody’s idea of fun. We can’t help you unpack, but we can automatically cover your contents for up to 14 days at the new address from the day you start your move.4

Legal Liability

We provide cover for up to $20 million for legal liability to pay damages due to a claim for an accident that arises in relation to you or your contents and results in death, bodily injury or damage to someone else’s property.4

Earthquake

Your contents are covered for loss or damage caused by earthquake.5

Storm

We’ll cover your contents against loss or damage caused by storm, including lightning, wind, hail and snow.6

Flood

Flood cover is included as standard with your contents policy.7

Locks and Keys

If your house keys are stolen, your Youi Contents insurance will cover the cost of replacement up to $1,000 after excess.4

Clean-up and Professional Fees

You don’t want to be dealing with damage and debris. That’s why you’re covered for the costs of removing contents debris from your home following an insured event.8

Escaping Water

Whether it happens suddenly and without warning, or slowly over time and you could not reasonably have been aware of it, you’re covered for loss or damage to your contents caused by escaping water such as burst pipes or appliance failures.4

Explosion

In the unlikely event of an accidental explosion, your contents will be covered for loss or damage.4

Animal Damage

Our Contents insurance includes cover for loss or damage to your contents caused by an animal, excluding pets, vermin, insects and certain bird behaviours.4

Storage of Undamaged Contents

If you need to put undamaged contents in storage after an insured event as they cannot be kept at the premises, we’ll cover the storage costs until they can be returned to your home.9

Burnout of Electric Motors

We’ll pay for the cost of repairing or replacing burnt-out electric motors in your household appliances caused by mechanical, electrical or electronic failure up to $1,000 after excess.4

Broken Glass and Ceramics

This covers the cost of replacing your accidentally broken glass or ceramics up to a value of 10% of the amount your contents are insured for, after excess.4

Contents Outside

Life doesn’t just happen indoors. We provide cover for loss or damage to contents kept outside at your home up to a maximum of $20,000 after excess.10

Contents in Transit

We’ll cover your contents if they are lost or damaged due to a motor accident or fire while they’re in the truck of a professional removalist.11

Damage from Injury or Incident

We’ll pay up to $10,000 after excess for the damage to or soiling of your contents as a result of physical assault or death or the police investigations relating to them.

Vehicle Spare Parts and Accessories

We’ll pay up to $500 after excess to cover loss or damage to spare parts or tools incurred as a result of an insured event, as long as they are not on or in a vehicle.4

Guests’ Contents

We provide up to $1,000 of cover for loss or damage to your guests’ contents because of an insured event at your premises.4

Funeral Expenses

We’ll pay $5,000 towards funeral expenses if you or a household member dies as a result of an insured event.

Impact

Whether it’s a tree, a power pole or even a satellite, you’re covered if your contents are damaged due to impact.4

Riot

Loss or damage to your contents caused by riot or civil commotion is covered as standard.

Counselling Services

We know going through a big event can be tough. That’s why Youi covers up to $1,500 per household member for counselling sessions after an accepted claim in relation to an insured event.4

While your landlord likely has insurance to cover the building you live in, that won’t cover your personal belongings – they’re your responsibility.  

Contents insurance for renters is designed to cover your possessions for loss or damage due to an insured event.

We know that life can take unexpected turns, and couples may sometimes go their separate ways. When this happens, you might need to update your contents sum insured or organise a new policy. Get in touch and one of Youi’s advisors can guide you through any policy changes you may need.

Contents insurance for renters doesn’t cover loss or damage to the building you live in – that’s your landlord’s responsibility. High-value items such as jewellery may also need to be covered separately. Jewellery items or sets worth more than $15,000 can be specified on your policy and you can also nominate the total coverage amount for unspecified jewellery.  

Items used away from home, such as bikes, golf clubs or cameras, are not covered by standard contents insurance when they’re not in your home. To cover these items anywhere you take them, you can add the optional Contents Accidental Loss or Damage cover. We recommend that you read the PDS to see the full list of exclusions, additional costs and limits that will apply.

The cost of contents insurance for renters can vary depending on location, home security, coverage amount and claims history.

Increasing your basic excess may also lead to a reduction in your insurance premium, but you will end up paying more out-of-pocket if you make a claim.

To ensure you’re fully covered, it’s important to accurately estimate the value of replacing your possessions brand new. Being underinsured could leave you short should you need to lodge a claim.

A contents calculator like this one can be helpful in estimating how much it may cost to replace your belongings. It’s also a good idea to take close-up photos and keep receipts for valuable items.

Yes! Our contents insurance provides up to $20 million in legal liability for damages due to a claim for an accident that arises in relation to you or your contents and results in death, bodily injury or damage to someone else’s property.4

Our Tenant’s Liability applies if your landlord’s fitted carpets, fixtures or fittings are damaged due to an insured event. If you are responsible for insuring them under the terms of your rental or lease agreement, we’ll cover the cost to repair or replace them, so you don’t have to.13

Youi contents insurance for renters covers you for up to $20,000 after excess for loss or damage to items that are kept at the property but outside your home – places like your balcony or a carport.10

You can also add our optional Contents Accidental Loss or Damage cover for items that could get lost or damaged away from your home – this is useful for hobby items often used away from home, such as bikes, cameras and golf clubs.12
