Olivia Kernick is a rising star in women's rugby league. She’s taken the NRLW by storm with her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft and team. In an interview alongside her Mum, Del, the charismatic duo offers a glimpse into the remarkable journey that has led Olivia to her current success.
A family of athletes
Born into a family with a rich sporting heritage, Olivia's path to athletic achievement almost seems preordained. Del has an impressive touch footy background, having played for Manly and the Central Coast Dolphins.
This passion for sports extends to their wider family, with a cousin who made his mark playing for the renowned New Zealand All Blacks rugby union team. It was within this environment that Olivia's love for sports was nurtured and blossomed, as she was immersed in a world of athletic pursuits.
“Over the years, I’ve been a supportive parent and got her into different sports to help her find her niche,” says Del. “I registered her in as many sports as I could: nippers, little athletics, swimming, netball, league tag, oz tag, touch, league, AFL, volleyball and water polo.”
Olivia’s early experiences with touch footy and netball in particular honed her agility, ball skills and hand-eye coordination, and laid the foundation for her future success in rugby league.
Embracing rugby league
Olivia's rugby league journey began at the age of 17 when she joined the Wyong Roos junior club. Her natural talent and determination quickly propelled her through the ranks and opened the door for her to play in the NRLW with the Newcastle Knights and eventually the Sydney Roosters.
Olivia's transition to rugby league wasn't without its challenges. “When I first started playing, I actually didn't know the rules and had no idea how to play,” she admits. “It wasn't until I went to the Roosters and had a really good coach that it actually started to make sense to me."
Del says that when Olivia joined the Roosters, she always thought she had the potential to go far in rugby league. “This is it. You can go further from here. Look at you now,” she says to Olivia, “amazing!”
Del’s unwavering support as #1 fan
Throughout Olivia's career, Del has been her biggest cheerleader and number 1 fan. Del's unwavering support has been instrumental in Olivia's success, including attending every game and sending encouraging messages.
“Before I play, Mum sends me a ‘pump-up’ text,” Olivia explains, as she reads one aloud. “Mum’s catchphrase is ‘Boom’ with lots of emojis,” she laughs.
Del's infectious enthusiasm and steadfast belief in Olivia's abilities have been a driving force behind her daughter's remarkable journey and why she’s Olivia’s keenest supporter.
“I love being able to make Mum proud," Olivia shares. "I think it's my favourite thing to do. The reason I play is knowing that Mum never misses a game and she's always there to support me no matter what. That’s the role of the number one supporter," she adds.
Del reciprocates this sentiment, saying, “Yes, I make it to all her games. Every time she steps on the paddock, I'm just in awe of her and think, ‘Gosh, she's amazing. Look what she's doing’.”
Both Del and Olivia share a deep sense of pride in Olivia's achievements. Representing her country, state and Indigenous and Māori heritage in the World Cup and All Stars are moments that hold special significance for both mother and daughter.
Olivia has Māori ancestry on Del’s side of the family and her father’s heritage traces to the Wiradjuri people of central New South Wales. “I’m really blessed to have Indigenous and Māori blood,” says Olivia, “it’s such an honour to represent both of my cultures. I feel a lot closer to Mum because I’ve played for Māori All Stars,” replies Olivia.
“And I’m very proud and humbled that she gets to play for both of her cultures,” adds Del.
Versatility and skill on the pitch
Olivia's playing style is characterised by her versatility, impressive ball skills, tackling ability and strength. Her coaches and teammates marvel at her ability to adapt to different positions and make impactful plays on the field.
“I reckon all the sports I did at a younger age have really shaped the player that I am today,” Olivia reflects. “Netball and touch footy definitely taught me all the fundamentals for NRL.”
The future looks incredibly bright for Olivia. With her sights set on playing for another five years, she aspires to continue pushing boundaries and achieving new heights in her chosen sport.
Beyond her playing days, Olivia expresses interest in pursuing a career in sports media, a path that aligns perfectly with her passion for sports and engaging personality.
Off the field: a people person
Away from the rugby league pitch, Olivia is known for her vibrant personality. She enjoys socialising, spending time with friends and family, and exploring her passion for travel.
Her infectious energy and zest for life make her a much-loved figure both on and off the field. “I love being around friends and family and the people I love and care about,” Olivia says.
Olivia Kernick's story is one of perseverance, dedication, and the unwavering support of a loving family. As she continues to make her mark in the world of rugby league, it's clear that her star will only continue to rise.
“I see a bright future for my daughter,” says Del. “I’m Olivia Kernick’s number 1 fan!”
