As 2025 pulls to a stop, now's the time to glance back through the windscreen of the year and see what really unfolded on our roads. What cars were Aussies choosing to drive? When did things get a bit dicey out there? And which insurance trends – EVs, caravans, new cars – picked up speed?
Welcome to Youi Wrapped 2025 – a look at the everyday moments, behaviours and car insurance surprises captured in the Youi 2025 archives. Buckle up as we take you through the year that was.
Here are the top 10 insurance trends that stood out in 2025 based on Youi internal data from 26 November 2024 to 25 November 2025:
1. SUVs take the crown with nearly half of all new quotes
SUVs strengthened their position as one of Australia’s favourite car types to insure. In 2024, they made up 42% of all Youi car insurance quotes.1 By 2025, they’ve climbed to 44%.1 That’s well ahead of hatchbacks (18%) and sedans (16%) – both of which have eased over time.1

Inside the category, medium SUVs are still the go-to vehicle for most Youi customers – models like the Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail made up 40% of all SUV quotes.1

2. South Australia tops the list for parking-related claims
Parking accidents happened everywhere in 2025 – but when adjusting for the number of active policies in each state, South Australia recorded the highest rate for parking-related claims at 1.76%. At the other end of the scale, the ACT saw the lowest rate of parking-related claims at 1.41%.3
Here’s how the rest of the states stacked up, from highest to lowest:
- South Australia
- New South Wales
- Western Australia
- Victoria
- Queensland
- Tasmania
- Australian Capital Territory3
3. Friday was the most accident–prone day of the week
Some things don’t change – in 2024, Friday was the riskiest day to be on the road.4 The same goes for 2025, with Friday recording the highest share of weekly accidents, edging out every other day at 15.8%.4
Whether it’s end–of–week fatigue, peak traffic or a rush to start the weekend road trip, Friday consistently sees more road accidents than any other day.4
Sundays were – once again – the quietest day of the week for accidents at 10.79%.4

Data percentages in these tables have been rounded. As a result, the sum of the individual numbers may not always add up to 100%.
4. 3pm was the single worst hour of the day for car accidents
The mid-afternoon school run continues to be the trickiest window on the road. In 2025, 3pm showed the highest share of daily accidents, standing out more than any other hour.4 It’s that moment when traffic spikes, kids spill out of classrooms, and everyone seems to be on the move – and our data reflects that.
On the flipside, the early-morning hours before sunrise – between 12am and 5am – saw the fewest accidents.4
5. EV insurance quotes climbed 9% in the past year
Interest in electric cars maintains its upward momentum, making up 2.65% of all Youi car insurance quotes in 2024, increasing to 2.9% in 2025 – a 9% year-on-year lift.5
Still, EVs remain a small slice of the total picture, with regular petrol and diesel vehicles accounting for roughly 90% of new quotes in 2025.5
6. Chinese-brand EVs are rapidly catching up to Tesla
Tesla is still the biggest name in the EV space, but its dominance is slipping. In 2025, 46% of all EV insurance quotes were for Tesla – down from 59% in 2024 and well below the 80%+ share it held in 2021.6
Meanwhile, Chinese-brand EVs are surging. They jumped from 23% of EV car insurance quotes in 2024 to 33% in 2025, continuing a sharp upward trend that began in 2022.6
7. Caravan quotes more than tripled 2017 levels
The great Australian caravan boom didn’t fade after lockdowns. Caravans continue to be the standout choice among Aussies insuring a caravan or trailer. In 2025, caravan quotes were 347% higher than in 2017.7
Camper trailers also followed an upward arc, sitting 160% above 2017 levels in 2025.7
8. New car quotes hold steady above 2019 levels
New cars aren’t climbing year after year anymore, but they’re sitting well above where they were in 2019. Back then, new vehicles made up about 30% of Youi’s quotes.8 They rose through 2021-23, reaching a high of just over 40%, before easing back to 34.75% in 2025.8
Used vehicles remain the larger group overall, accounting for almost 60% of quotes when combining dealer, private-sale and auction purchases.8
9. Queensland hailstorm drives busiest claims day
The year’s biggest surge in claims hit on 24th November 2025,9 after a powerful storm rolled across South-East Queensland. The system brought giant hail, destructive winds and intense lightning, leaving more than 150,000 residents without power and hundreds of power lines down across the region.10
10. Christmas Day recorded the fewest claims
25th December was the quietest day in the calendar for Youi claims.9 With most Aussies off the road, gathered at home or celebrating with family, Christmas delivered the lowest number of claims in 2025.9
And that’s our year, wrapped
From Australia’s EV uptake to caravan adventures and the Friday accident spike, Youi Wrapped shows how Aussies moved, travelled and drove in 2025. If our look back on 2025 insurance trends has you thinking about the year ahead, it might be a good time to explore car insurance options with Youi.2
