Basic Vehicle Safety Checks

Keeping a vehicle properly maintained is essential for safety. A well-maintained car can reduce the risk of vehicle failure and a potentially serious crash. Some basic maintenance that are essential for safety include:

  • Lights should be free from dirt and in working order. Go around the car to check that all lights work correctly.
  • Windshields should always be clean and unbroken. They are coated with a flexible film which is designed to protect drivers in the event of an accident, preventing glass from shattering over occupants and the entry of objects via the windshield. A clean windshield is also essential for the driver’s visibility. So clean both surfaces and ensure windshield wipers are in good condition with fluids topped up.
  • Mirrors should be clean, and correctly positioned for optimum visibility behind and at the sides of your vehicle.
  • Tyre pressure should be checked to prevent a reduction in fuel efficiency and to avoid premature tread wear. Check wheel alignment and balance as well. And don't forget the condition of the spare tyre.
  • Oil changes should be a routine, as they can help a car run more effectively. At the same time, you can check your vehicle for fluid leaks by looking around and underneath it.

Other areas you may also want to look at and ensure you maintain is your battery, it is typically recommended to be replaced every 48 months give or take.  Another important vehicle safety check is your brakes; it is alarming how many people don’t consider checking their brakes regularly, considering that this is one of the most important safety features of any car and a common cause in accidents resulting in many claims for those that have car insurance one would expect people to be more aware of when to get your brakes looked at to ensure they are maintained properly.

There are many ways you can test your brakes yourself, your foot brake can be tested by applying your brakes while you lightly rest your hands on the stearin wheel, if the car swerves in either direction you know this is a sign to maybe get your brakes looked at as most likely you may have a problem with your brake lining.  Your brake pedal should also be used without any sounds like grinding or squeaking therefore if you hear any noise it is a good indication to get your car looked at.

Basic checks like these can really help to ensure that your vehicle remains safe and in a great condition for longer!
